Winter Wonder – a Story for the Dark days

Edinburgh  1818

Mary, Countess of Calder, stretched. The bed was colder than usual this morning and she knew before her arm made a sweep of the space beside her, that Lennox had risen and left her in the early morning. He was doing so more and more. Mary sighed. She should not grumble because many ladies had never enjoyed the company of their husbands through any night.

He would be in the breakfast room and today she would surprise him by joining him there. The children did not need her as they were entertained by so many visiting cousins and little friends, she was hardly noticed when she did go to the nurseries.

Yes, Mary decided. She rang for Agnes.
