Mum, Mummy, Mom, Mommy, Mam, Ma, Mama, Mother a name with so many variations it makes the head spin.
What does it mean? So many things to anyone you ask. For me translating the experience of having a mum into being a mum was one of life’s really big adventures. Nothing prepares you for that all-consuming stage in life when other little persons’ needs always have to come before yours.
Mornings tend to melt into afternoons into evenings and for years you’re so glad it’s Saturday, but what happened to the rest of the week? Being cheerful at 3am when a teething baby needs comfort is a skill I only sketchily mastered. Being cheerful at 3am when a roaming teenager finally gets home is one I didn’t!
I wouldn’t swap any of it, however, and know what there are other names, Words like Granny, Gran, Grandma, Granmamma. Nan. Nanny.
They’re unbeatable.

I’m about to be a Mum myself. It’s terrifying and thrilling in equal measure.
Good luck with the A to Z Challenge!

Hullo, SL, congratulations and good wishes. I remember being driven home with our new bundle by my husband and wondering why they’d let me get away with her. ‘I haven’t passed the exam.’ Mad thoughts, but I did feel woefully unprepared. She’s in her thirties so it worked out! Good luck, Anne
